Jamal Murray among 5 eyeing first NBA All-Star appearance in 2023-24

After missing out on the All-Star team in his career, Jamal Murray is among five players who could be on the cusp of their initial All-Star berth if they can avoid some key roadblocks.

Murray, 26, has been one of the most consistent players in the NBA over the past few seasons, averaging 20.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He's also a key part of the Denver Nuggets' success, helping them reach the Western Conference Finals in each of the past two seasons.

Other players who could be in line for their first All-Star appearance include:

  • Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana Pacers
  • Anthony Davis, Los Angeles Lakers
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks

All five of these players have shown All-Star potential at various points in their careers. But they'll need to continue to play at a high level and avoid injuries in order to make the All-Star team in 2023-24.

Murray, for example, has been hampered by injuries in the past. He missed the entire 2021-22 season with a torn ACL. But he's looked healthy and explosive in the preseason, and he's eager to prove that he's still one of the best young players in the NBA.

"My goal is to be an All-Star and an All-NBA player," Murray said. "I think I'm capable of doing that. I just have to stay healthy and continue to work hard."
