UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals
Real Madrid beat Manchester City 4-3 on penalties
The teams drew 1-1 on the night and 4-4 on aggregate
Manchester City's hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals were dashed on Wednesday night as they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium.
The teams had drawn 1-1 on the night and 4-4 on aggregate, meaning the tie went to a shoot-out. Riyad Mahrez scored the opening penalty for City, but Karim Benzema equalised for Real.
Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden then missed their spot-kicks, while Luka Modric and Rodrygo scored for Real. Bernardo Silva pulled one back for City, but Dani Carvajal scored the winning penalty to send Real through to the semi-finals.
It was a cruel end for City, who had dominated the game for long periods and created a number of chances.
