F1 British GP: Russell takes shock pole as Hamilton joins him on front row

Mercedes driver Russell secured his second career pole position at Silverstone, with team-mate Hamilton second

Lando Norris completes home one-two-three for McLaren in qualifying

George Russell has secured pole position for the British Grand Prix in a shock qualifying result that saw Mercedes lock out the front row.

Russell, who had only taken one pole in his career before this weekend, put in a stunning lap to beat team-mate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.075 seconds.

It is the first time that Mercedes have locked out the front row since the 2020 British Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who is chasing a record-breaking eighth British GP victory, will start alongside Russell on the front row.

Lando Norris completed a home one-two-three for McLaren by qualifying third.

The result is a blow to Red Bull, who had been expected to challenge for pole position at their home race.

Max Verstappen, who won the last two races, could only qualify fourth, while team-mate Sergio Perez was down in sixth.

The race will start at 3pm on Sunday.
